We were walking into a stand Friday morning, and I saw a coyote about 300 yards out running away; he turned and looked a couple of times, like he wasn't that spooked, so I told my partner not to shoot at him (long shot offhand to me). As we walked further in to set up, another one came from the same place as the first, but this one was doing mach 2. So I'm wondering if we should have stopped after the first one, left, or what; it was my first time in the place, so I wasn't sure how/where to set up anyway. Guess I should have pre-scouted. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

you have got to get in without being seen, smelled or heard

otherwise you are wasting your time

and probally educating them

I would have called it anyway, using coyote vocalizations. No distress. If nothing comes in, don't push it. I would then come back in a week or two and try it again, just like a normal stand.

We actually went ahead and called, with a mix of distress and vocals; I had a scorpion borrowed from a guy at work, thinking of getting one for myself, but it did not have any challenge vocals on it really. Do you think next weekend would be too soon to try again?

You might wait a little while and let the stand cool off. Give it a try in 2 weeks. Go up to Eufuala and call in the bottoms NW of Canadian.

what are the chances you guys have had a t a place someone has shot and missed? an educated coyote? i ask because my buddy has at a place and i didnt think it was worth the effort for a while..

Depends on the coyote or the situation. Never count them out but don't take them for being dumb either.

Different sound, different approach, different cadence in your calling. Also helps to be aware of the downwind side and to sit still long after you quit calling, sometimes they sneek in just to see what all the fuss was about.

You have no way of knowing whether there is another out there.....go ahead and call it...

Im with arky. You never know if the coyotes you bumped are passer bys or residents of the area. Ive called and missed coyotes and went back the next day called from same spot and killed coyotes. You just never know. I hunt my places wether private or public untill they stop responding or I dont see any fresh sign then I give it a rest. Hope this helps

had this happen to me a few weeks ago
was walkin in to a stand with a couple of new guys (new to predator huntin) in a new place
we were approachin quiet
and a large (looked like a male) got up out of a very large acacia bush/tree
and ran straight into heavy cover (he got up about 10 yds from me)
i feebly attempted a bark or two (hoping to get a glimpse) to no avail
i whispered we should try the spot anyway
and 2 minutes after a sequence of small rabbit stuff from my hand call
a year-old coyote showed (although skiddish)
from the same direction the other more mature yote had disappeared to
no time to get to the shotgun and i blasted him with some 52 grain 223 at about 20 yds
good thing i keep my scope on 3 power most of the time
still saw nothin but coyote in the scope at that distance

i vote...get down immediately
and start callin

YOU JUST NEVER KNOW...I TRY TO BE QUITE GOING INTO ANY AREA, BUT I'VE SHOT ONE COYOTE AND JUST KEPT CALLING AND IN A FEW MIN. ANOTHER WOULD SHOW UP. GOOD LUCK..

had one pop up at ten yards to close to do any thing she saw me and and ran. i called for about another ten min with nothing but distress. got up walked over the hill waited about 20-30 min. let out a couple howls with my voice. and then here she came. it was two dark to shoot. just shows you never know what could happen. always try.
