Congratulations Hank..some of my fondest memories are sitting around the campfire in the mountains hearing the sizzle of elk meat cooking. I can almost smell and taste it right now. Good friends just made it that much better. I hope you have a good hunt.

I drew a cow tag for the Wichita Mountain Refuge elk hunt and got my elk at about 8 am on the first morning. My main comment is that elk sure die hard. It took 2 shots to put her down at 300 yds with 300 mag and 180 gr Hornady interlock. After crossing a canyon to get to her she still had her head up and it took two more shots to kill her.

good job rio. i myself drew a cow elk tag at wichita mtns about three years a go. opening morning the first elk i saw was a huge 6 by 7 bull standing out in an open field about 170 yards away and another smaller bull with him. put a sneak on them up to 140 yards before they sences something werent right and walked off over the rise of the field. had plenty of oppertunity to shoot if i would have had a bull tag. any way saw a herd of cows later that morning and called them to the edge of the woods but would not give me a shot. next morning wind was blowing at least 30 mph all day. didnt see elk all morning so sat on some bolders eating lunch and watched a herd of bison down below feedin for an hour. got digusted with all the wind so i was going back to my pickup spot to go in and thoght this is the only time i will get to do this in okla. so i went to a stand of cedars and sat down on the ground close to block the wind and about 45 minutes later a herd of cows came troting by realy close so i picked out what looked like the oldes one and pulled the trigger on my .338
she went about 40yards and went down. she weighted in at 300 pounds. hope this wasnt too long of post. if i new how to do photos on a pc i would of had some pics.

Sounds like a god time and some really good eating. The harder you have to work for them, the better they taste.
WTG............
Oh and welcome TJ.
