I'm a newbie, sorry. I have taken my fill of most game animals, and now am hoping to switch to predators. One interersting opportunity on my place (NW Carter Cty), is that there is a 5 acre tract on my north border of my 1/4 section. An elderly couple live in a mobile home there, eeking out a living (in part) by raising chickens and selling eggs. The Yotes are eating up her flock..... and cause them a signigicant loss yearly. I have witnessed the yotes working the cover waiting for a yardbird to come within striking distance.... this has been going on for years.
Calling hasnt proven very effective, the food is there when they want it (daytime). I was thinking of tethering a rooster, 50 or 100 yards beyond where the birds usually range (closer to cover)hoping to create an irresistable chicken sandwich..... while I am set up nearby..... does anyone have an opinion on the legality???? Traps were considered, but my own livestock and the neighbors dogs will surely get into them. The neighbors I speak of are in their 70's, the old fella cant shoot straight even if he does try (rarely). These are really nice folks, would sure like to help them out.

Welcome to the site Dwayne. I would think there would be no problem using a domestic bird as bait.

Thanks for writing Kelly, my place is in NW Carter County, near Fox Okla, Looks like you are in Comanche down the road to the west of me about 25-30 miles. I have only used dying rabbit call, and wounded crow,(mouth calls). An electronc call seemed like it would be an advantage, so I could get the source of the sound away from me. It does work, but no better than the mouth calls. I dunno, on a set up, I average less than 10% chance of getting a yote in..... I see scat and trax all over, must be plenty of them around. Just last weekend, I saw (while doing unrelated ranch work) a coyote birddogging 3 does. Then sunday, I drove down a lease road into an open pasture where my cows were, and there was one right there among them! I did get off a running shot but missed. I always carry my 10-22 even when working. Plenty of cats about too.
I thought I had a better idea on the wind problem. I call mostly from a deer stand (portable). So I am 12 feet or so above ground, but always in a group of trees, fairly well concealed. Only twice have I called anything in from a ground set up.
2 Anwwer your question, no, I have not used any coyote vocalizations at all. I am not very well informed on what to use, when and why..... I got a howler, but have no confidence in it...... I am a little parnoid about educating them and making them even more difficult to kill. My house is 600 feet off a section line road, and there is often plenty of scat on it, maybe its a boundary.....
I had some early success with the rabbit and crow call last fall, but diminishing effectiveness ever since..... funny, the crows still come in to the crow call, but now dogs..

Trapper2
My place is in NW Carter County, near Fox Okla. I am in the western rolling foothills of the Arbuckle Mountains. See my related post to Kelly.
I am smack dab in the postoak savahnna. Faily heavily wooded, nearly all post oak and black jack. Lots of narrow winding trails and most all clearings are small. A few creeks and deep ravines. My SE corner is only accessible by 4wheeler. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of non inhabited land. Most shooting is short range. There are a few trails and roads that might afford a long shot, or a long shot across a valley. Coyotes I think have an easy life on my place, too easy. They are clever enough to know, (by scent I suppose), when a cow is going to drop a calf..... they dont seem to bother the calf, but the afterbirth is like chocolate cake to them....I see them hanging around in close proximity to the cows often only to find a new calf a day or 2 later. My neighbors chickens are a different matter.... they are pretty bold to run into the yard and grab them in the middle or the day. Once a bobcat came in, got spooked into a tree in the yard, when my neighbor came out, the cat jumped down ran across the yard to escape and grabbed a chicken on the way out..... guess it was just convenient......

Trapper2,
Yeah, you are from a select group, there isnt much around Hennepin these days. mainly the post office is left. But yeah, you were right down the road from me..... my place is 3 miles west of Poolville, one mile south. Deer are more plentiful than when I bought the place in 2001, turkey about the same, quail are always scarce. Hogs started moving in 2 yrs ago, but not in great numbers, but they will be..... a very very good mast crop this year, best I have seen, bet the hogs will make use of it.
So you are north central these days,?? Ponca City, Stillwater?? Dwayne

trappe 2 In 2006, they evacuated the area, I was already out. Wind blowing 50 mph with 10% humidity. My son was trying to get in, but was turned away. He and a friend went around the fire crews and sneaked in. My house was on fire on 2 corners, the well house ablaze. The garden hoses, on the gound had already burned. My son and a friend kicked in the garage door, got some buckets, filled them with water and put out the wellhouse first, then went to work on the main structure. If they had been 5 minutes later, there would have been no saving it. My 7 closest neighbors houses burned to the ground, as well as my barn. The fire THIS year was equally scary, but burned around me due mainly to lack of fuel. My place was over grazed at that point. Was lucky for once. The vol fire dept building in Fox burned that time.

Have you ever tried the Game chicken distress. I got it on an old tape, it has never failed me yet on critters that have got a taste for yard bird.

I have never did this yet but have you heard of fish tribble hooks (big ones)hanging from a tree limb about 41/2 to 5 feet off the ground baited with fish. chicken or any kind of meat. this high they have to jump and grab it so the may get grabbed too and can not go any where after that. About the chicken loss put some lights up for night time and shoot them when they come in I had the same problem once and the coyote came right up to my house about 2:00 am just like he lived there and I had 3 dogs slepping on the front porch. I shot him in the face with a 12 guage at about 40 feet from the bathroom window.

The fish hook idea is a very bad one.

Dont do the fish hook thing there are WAY better ways of controling the problem, I knew a rancher who used them years ago and caught a guys coondog it's a horrible sight to see a dog stuck on one, and a good way to get in trouble. Dont get me wrong I am not bashing anyone and it does work, well! but you would feel bad if you caught some ones pet, dogs roam miles at night so any roaming dog would be fair game. I caught a blue heeler once in a #3 jump trap, found him about 30seconds before his owner rode up on a 4wheeler, to say the least it wasn't a good time and we almost went to blows about it, if it had been on a hook he would have had my a**
