Hi All,

I am a new member here at OPHA and just wanted to start off by introducing myself! My name is Steve Miller and I live in Fayetteville Tennessee. I found your site through our mutual friend Don McLain. I met Don on the Stickbow.com website.
Although I donít do a lot of predator-specific hunting, recently it has become a necessity due to our booming coyote population. Apparently our efforts to boost our turkey population had the same affect on the yotes! Even the game officials have started unofficially asking us to kill coyotes if we see them.

Now for the reason for this thread. Shortly after I met Don on the other site he bought one of my custom hunting knives. Shortly there after he said that he wanted me to make a knife for your organization. After Don and I talked about it a little he asked if I could do a build-along showing the various steps that it takes to make one of my knives. I think we gonna do that and a little more.

So, hereís the plan. First we (all of you) have to decide on what style of knife it should be. I have never made two identical knives and I can make just about anything that you can dream up. Iím assuming that weíll start with a good basic skinner. Something smallish, with some blade length and a good belly for pushing the hide off the meat. Also, I think it probably needs a little tip length for reaching in or around the ears etc.

Iíll post a few pics of some knives Iíve made; some simple, some elaborate. Remember this is yalls knife so if you see something you like tell me. If you donít want to post it just PM me. Once we get a good basic design figured out weíll talk about the handle!
Also, we have to decide about the design and placement of the OPHA logo ;-)

Lets have some fun with this!!

Thanks and God Bless

Ok, here's the first pic in the build-along. I make most of my knives out of turn-of-the-century sawmill blades. It's L6 steel if you're interested in the details! I do make some out of O1 and an occasional Damascus blade.

This is the blade I cut the blank out of and the blank after I cut it!

First off let me say WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!! Those are some awesome knives bow bow bow. If I had to choose a favorite it would be a tough call between the bottom left and the bottom right. This should be fun and interesting to watch. Thanks for doing this!

This will be a lot of fun. I always thought about trying to make my own knife but haven't researched it any. Now I can watch one come together right here. Good recruiting Don!

Don, You've out done yourself this time. Great idea. Steve, welcome to our humble abode. As a gunsmith I've often thought how cool it would be to make my own knife. I'd give me left one to be able to study under a true master knife maker such as yourself. I've know a number of folks that build knives and I am always amazed at how artistic they come out. Your knives look increadible. Look forward to maybe meeting you someday.

I am kinda partial to a drop point like the bottom right, but like the stag handle like the upper left.

Do you make the Sheaths too? If not we have another member on the board here Sarge that is incredible at leather work.

Look forward to watching the progress.

Hey Lazy, I am no master but thanks for the compliments. I wish I knew more about photography because the pictures always make my knives look drab to me. Being a gunsmith means that you could make a truly beautiful knife anytime you wanted. The skills are very much the same with a little knowledge about how steel acts being the most helpful.

If it's the sarge I know I am currently making him two knives and we swapped for leather work! One of the things he sent me didn't get in the door good before my wife scarfed it up! He is awesome!!!!

God Bless

I like this one.

I made knives when I was in high school. My dad's way of keeping me away from the evils of youth. I built mine out of old leaf springs. They were heavy, but you couldn't damage them with a bulldozer. My dad still makes one every now and then.

Leaf springs are still a good steel source if you can find them thin enough or have the ability to flatten them.

We found a couple old International trucks out hunting, they had relatively thin leaves so we went back with tools and took all the spring packs. I think I've got one full leaf left. Might have to make one of those arc style knives like you've got.

If they're thin and you can work with them they'll make a knife that will last forever. They're super high carbon and can take some abuse in the building process! Send pics if you make one!!

Bottom right is as close as any of these come for me. I still like drop points.

Ok guys and gals. Here's a sketch I made from the ideas you stated and PMd me about. The handle is black because the material is still open to debate. The handle shape is also still open to tweaking. Just let me know!

I also added a pic of one I finished yesterday! Bead blasted finish with Giraffe Bone handle and Ebony hi-lite.

I'm not a big fan of finger grooves. They never seem to be in the right place, and they can be uncomfortable should you ever need to change the positioning of your hand.

This is a wonderful thread...and I LOVE that one on the fence...Like Jeff....I better start saving my $$....thanks Highpockets!!

I found this size and shape to be almost perfect!! I carry and use this one daily...

The litle revolver is a 1963 flat latch Model 36, J - frame Smith & Wesson...for size comparison.....please excuse the call....I think this is the only pic I have of the little knife...
